[ Posted Sun, 15 Jun 2014 22:01:00 ]

Chose you gear carefully.

Once you’ve selected the gear, make a list.

It’s all about the bag.

Speaking of the bag… Don’t put it down.

And whatever you do, don’t check it!

Be inconspicuous in your surroundings.

And while we’re on the subject…

Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket.

Keep important documentation handy.

Make friends with a local.

Have an amazing time.

1) Qin Shi Huang's burial complex was the largest in the world - and it was probably never completed.

2) Qin was an effective and powerful ruler, but he was also known for his cruelty.

3) Each soldier in the Terracotta Army has distinct facial features.

Almost all the regions of the ancient Mediterranean world are represented in the collection. There are objects from Rome and Italy, from Istanbul (the Byzantine city of Constantinople) and Turkey, from Greece and the Balkans, from Egypt, Nubia, Ethiopia and North Africa, from the countries of the Near and Middle East, and from Russia; in other words, all the areas encompassed by the Western and Eastern Roman Empires and the states which fell heir to the culture of Byzantium.

Bode Museum

Within this broad spectrum, four main aspects define the Berlin collection's distinctive profile. Late Antique Roman sarcophagi and sarcophagi fragments offer a panorama of early Christian iconography from the capital of the Western Roman Empire. Rich holdings of figurative and ornamental sculpture from the Eastern Roman Empire allow the stylistic variety and development of this art form to be studied to a degree and depth that is rivalled only by the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul. Precious ivory carvings and mosaic icons document the high technical and artistic standard of Byzantine court art. Finally, everyday objects from Egypt give insights into ordinary life, while liturgical accoutrements bear witness to the worship practices of the early Christian church. Some of these objects are rare excavated finds of organic material, such as wood or fabric, which owe their preservation to Egypt's hot and dry desert climate.

Skulpturensammlung at the Bode-Museum

The Skulpturensammlung is one of the largest collections of ancient sculpture in the world and is housed in the Bode-Museum on the Museumsinsel Berlin. The sculptures range in date from the early Middle Ages to the late 18th century and come from the German-speaking countries, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. Visitors are greeted by a wonderful variety of Italian masterworks, starting with medieval sculptures such as the Madonna by Presbyter Martinus and the'Man of Sorrows'by Giovanni Pisano, and leading to works by masters of the early Renaissance. Glazed terracottas by Luca della Robbia, Donatello's'Pazzi Madonna',and the portrait busts of Desiderio da Settignano and Mino da Fiesole form particular highlights in the collection.

The concept of the museum, which was originally called the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum, can be traced back to Crown Princess Victoria of Prussia, who published her ideas in a memorandum in 1883. It was Wilhelm von Bode who finally put these ground-breaking ideas into practice. In 1897, construction work began at the northern tip of the Museum Island on a museum that was to be devoted to the Renaissance, designed by Eberhard von Ihne. Once completed, the museum would bear the name of Empress Victoria's deceased husband, Kaiser (Emperor) Friedrich, who died in 1888. When the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum opened in 1904, painting and sculpture, considered at the time as the 'high arts', were for the first time presented side by side on an equal footing with each other — a presentation strategy that differed radically from that of traditional museums.

The Skulpturensammlung is one of the largest collections of ancient sculpture in the world. Its sculptural works range in date from the early Middle Ages to the late 18th century and originate from the German-speaking countries, France, the Low Countries, Italy, and Spain.

Besides important anonymous works of sacred architectural sculpture such as the Romanesque tribune from Gröningen, works by legendary sculptors such as Donatello, Tilman Riemenschneider, Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, and Andreas Schlüter are a mark of the collection's overwhelming quality. The sculptures are displayed together with a selection of paintings from the Gemäldegalerie; the result is a lively dialogue that deliberately reveals the inherent qualities and mutual influences of each art form. Built-in portals, fireplaces, and decorative ceilings dating from the Italian Renaissance are incorporated into the museum's structure and provide an authentic setting for the works of art on display.

The Museum für Byzantinische Kunst boasts an excellent collection of Late Antique and Byzantine works of art and everyday objects that stem from all over the ancient Mediterranean region. Particular highlights include LateAntique sarcophagi, figurative and ornamental sculpture from the Eastern Roman Empire, and ivory carvings and mosaic icons from post-pharaonic, early Byzantine Egypt.

The building was badly damaged in the Second World War and underwent several stages of restoration between 1948 and 1986. In 1956 it was renamed the Bode-Museum after its first director and spiritual founder. German reunification also brought with it the merging of the previously separated collections under the auspices of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, with the decision soon being taken for the museum to undergo an extensive overhaul to bring it up to date with modern museum and conservation requirements.

SCHLOSS BAU MEISTER. Andreas Schlüter and Baroque Berlin

from: 04.04.2014 to: 13.07.2014
Bode-Museum

Hailed in his own lifetime as the “Northern Michelangelo”, Andreas Schlüter (1659/60 - 1714) was a baroque artist par excellence. Like the Italian master before him, Schlüter worked not only as a sculptor but also as an architect and designer of complex interior decorations that provided Berlin-Cölln, the burgeoning electoral seat, with its first sheen of European glamour.

To mark the 300thanniversary of Schlüter’s death, the Bode-Museum on the Museumsinsel (Museum Island) has put together the first-ever comprehensive exhibition on this important Berlin artist, a show that also includes items on loan from abroad.

The exhibition addresses all aspects of Andreas Schlüter’s varied career. Consisting of 230 objects ranging from sculpture, paintings and drawings to architectural sculpture and hand-crafted works, the exhibition resurrects the old, baroque centre of Berlin and allows Schlüter’s works to be seen in relation to those of his Italian and French influences, artists such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francois Girardon.

The show is also very timely, coinciding with the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace, which was built to plans drawn up by Schlüter.

The Bode-Museum rises above the water at the tip of the Museumsinsel Berlin like a moated palace. Designed by Ernst Eberhard von Ihne, it took just over seven years to build and opened in 1904 under the name Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum. The museum, which now bears the name of its first director, Wilhelm von Bode, today contains the Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst, as well as numerous paintings from the Gemäldegalerie and the coins and medals of the Münzkabinett.

Flat characters are also called stereotypes, and the hallmark of flat characters is that they are incapable of surprising us; they act in a prescribed way, and are utterly consistent, without complexity. […] A round character is the opposite of this: he or she is capable of surprising us — unexpected fits of anger or an uplifting sense of humor or a snide remark about a presumed friend. But a round character also convinces us. As E. M. Forster says, if a character never surprises us, then he or she is flat; if they surprise but do not convince us, they are only flat pretending to be round.

Have I told you already about tadaa?… Yes, I did…

But it’s worth to say, that it’s still free, can be used to back-up your instagram-account and with the new edge detection for depth-of-field-selection it’s really easy…

Not to mention the great filters and effects, as well as the great community…

If you are already a member, so follow me and I will follow you back… I’m really curious to see your pictures..

The revange of the equipment...
[ Posted Mon, 15 Apr 2013 00:16:00 ]

For weeks now… What am I saying … For months now, I don’t drag my heavy SLR camera around with me, as I’ve done half my life every day…

Finally I took it today with me again… And of course, the batteries are dead… Who would have thought? …

Anyway, I was forced to use the iPhone as camera… And in bad lighting conditions it takes for sure very poor images… As most other cameras also do…

I realized, however, that the iPhone takes acceptable macros, andespecially loves the color red…

How To Keep Your Memory Cards Healthy...
[ Posted Sun, 10 Feb 2013 10:18:00 ]

Memory cards are one of the most often neglected parts of digital photography. But, they're extremely important because they're responsible for safely storing your photos until you get them to your computer.

So, it's important to take care of them properly. Here are a few tips for keeping them healthy:

1.Format new cards as soon as you get them

Many memory cards are advertised as ...pre-formatted and ...ready to use, but it's always a good idea to reformat the card again when you receive it, since some cameras have special requirements for the file system of memory cards.Formatting the card with the camera you'll be using it with will ensure that the card is in a format that the camera recognizes.

2.Never fill your cards completely

Most cameras have some kind of indicator on the LCD screen that tells you how many more photos you can shoot before filling the card.Keep an eye on this number and make sure you never get too close to filling the card, because if you happen to shoot a photo when the card is already full, there's a chance your camera will still try to write part of the photo to the card (and potentially triggering a write error).

3. Never let your batteries drain completely

It's also important to never let your batteries drain completely, because if your camera runs out of energy at the exact moment that it's trying to write a photo to the memory card, then there's a good chance that the camera will only write part of the file (which could corrupt the rest of the card).

4. Reformat your cards instead of deleting all the photos

Instead of deleting the photos on the card from your computer, always reformat the card from within the camera. This will ensure the card is in a format that the camera expects.

5.Use good quality memory cards

With all those camera bodies and lenses being so expensive, it's tempting to save some money by getting inexpensive off-brand memory cards. But, remember the importance of these cards:they're responsible for safely storing your photos. It's worth a few dollars more to ensure your photos arrive safely at your computer.

Google, as in the 60ies...
[ Posted Thu, 13 Dec 2012 23:57:00 ]

"Google60 — Search Mad Men Style" is an art project to explore distances and heroism in user interfaces.

The concept behind is that the distance, i.e.: the “world-factor”, inherent in a user interface adds a heroic dimension of a special kind to what would be else a mere tool. In other words: The more worldly and obstructive the interface, the more intense the user’s desires in front of the machine. (E.g., an image composed of block-graphics that is merely resembling the depicted object might well be more amazing than a photo-realistic representation in high-resolution.)

It was to have been the nuclear age, but it became the search engine age…

Why Google? The general idea is that a search engine provides a well known and focused approach for the user-interaction. And it’s fun too … Have fun and explore.

6 tips and tricks to photographing your children...
[ Posted Wed, 10 Oct 2012 17:51:17 ]

  1. Get a little closer. One of the biggest differences you can make is to get closer to the subject in your photo. Sometime we are caught up with getting the nice scenery behind them and our children get lost in the image.
  2. Look for different angles. One way to get more variety in your photos is to look for different angles instead of always taking them straight on.
  3. Try to engage your kids. Be silly, make funny faces, jump around, sing silly songs. They will be more likely to give you natural expressions and they will have more fun.
  4. Try distracting your kids. It can be hard to get young children to stay still for a photo. Try putting something on your head like reindeer antlers or put something on the top of your camera like a fuzzy sticker. You will get their attention and they most likely look straight at your camera.
  5. Natural is OK. We all have this notion that we want the perfect portrait of our children. Remember to capture the every day moments. The blank stares in space, the moody, sullen moments, the quiet moments, these are all memories that you will want to look back upon, not just the smiling picture perfect moments
  6. Know when to stop. If you are starting to get upset with your kids then its time to put the camera away and try again another day.
Lightning…
  1. Golden hour! The best time of day to take outdoor pictures is one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset. The light is soft and pretty during those hours and the shadows are not as harsh. The next time you head to the beach, take your kids out for a nice walk one hour before sunset and bring your camera!
  2. Overcast days are the best! Whenever we have an overcast day I run and get my camera and head outdoors with the kids. The clouds create a diffuser over the sun and it softens the light and minimizes shadows. My favorite outdoor images have been taken on overcast days.
  3. Look for open shade. A great place is a porch, gazebo or under a tree. This will help your children from squinting.
  4. Back light. If you have to take pictures in bright open sun be sure to place the sun behind your child rather than putting the sun behind you. This will make a pretty halo of light behind your child and will also make them less likely to squint!

How to Take Sharp Digital Images...
[ Posted Thu, 09 Aug 2012 21:41:09 ]

Getting your digital images perfectly sharp is something that most photographers want – however clean, crisp, sharp images can be difficult to achieve.

Perhaps before we start exploring how to improve sharpness it would be good to talk about the main causes for lack of sharpness:

Here's a list of 10 basic things to think about when shooting to get sharp images:

1. Hold your camera well

2. Tripods

3. Shutter speed

4. Aperture

5. ISO

6. Image stabilisation

7. Focus

8. Good lenses

9. Get your eyes checked

10. Good equipment

El Gouna...
[ Posted Sat, 28 Jul 2012 00:09:00 ]

El Gouna (Arabic: الجونة, the lagoon) is a tourist resort, developed and owned by Sawiris’s Family and Merna Sawiris and Orascom Hotels and Development, dating from about 1990. It is located on the Red Sea in the Red Sea Governorate of Egypt, 22 km north of Hurghada International Airport.

El Gouna specializes in watersports, including scuba diving, windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, parasailing andsnorkelling. There are two main beaches, Zeytuna Beach located on its own island and Mangroovy Beach. A network of canals allow many houses to have their own strip of beach, even hundreds of metres inland. Most of these canals are crossed by small stone bridges.

Karnak...
[ Posted Sun, 22 Jul 2012 10:50:55 ]

The Precinct of Amun-Re, located near Luxor, Egypt, is one of the four main temple enclosures that make up the immense Karnak Temple Complex.

The precinct is by far the largest of these and the only one that is open to the general public. The temple complex is dedicated to the principal god of the Theban Triad, Amun, in the form of Amun-Re.

The site occupies roughly 250 000 m, containing many structures and monuments.

Most of the southwest is an open-air-assembling area with millions of stone fragments, from small to huge, laid out in long rows, awaiting reassembly into their respective monuments.

The area is not closed, as the temples of Khons and Opet both lie in this corner and are open to the public, though both are rarely visited considering the immense number of tourists coming to Karnak.

Luxor...
[ Posted Wed, 18 Jul 2012 23:25:35 ]

(Arabic: أَلْأُقْصُر ‎ Al ‘Uqṣur) is a city in Upper (southern) Egypt and the capital of Luxor Governorate with an area of approximately 416 square kilometres (161 sq mi).

As the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes, Luxor has frequently been characterized as the “world’s greatest open air museum”, as the ruins of the temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand within the modern city.

Immediately opposite, across the River Nile, lie the monuments, temples and tombs on the West Bank Necropolis, which include the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens.

Thousands of international tourists arrive annually to visit these monuments, contributing a large part towards the economy for the modern city.

21 Sample Poses to Get You Started with Photographing Groups of People...
[ Posted Thu, 14 Jun 2012 19:50:42 ]

Previously in the posing guide series articles we looked atposing female subjects, posing male subjects, posing childrenandposing couples. It is now time for posing groups of people.

There are usually three kinds of group shots. First are just formal shots with a large number of people. Second are more informal shots with a group of friends. And finally, photographing a group or family members. In this order, let's look at some sample poses and posing ideas.

1. When working with a large group of people you won't be able to control each individual's pose or expression. This is fine as long as you pay attention to the overall composition. Imagine the whole group to be a single object. Principally, make sure that all people in the group are visible.

Pimp your tumblr in a complete new way...
[ Posted Fri, 01 Jun 2012 19:00:00 ]

You possibly know my tumblr pimping tricks already, but here is the newest one, which I reeeeeally like!…

You can use THINGLINK with tumblr! Which means, that you (and others, if you allow it) can comment directly in your pictures, similar as it is possible on flickr…

You just point a place in your picture, add a comment and everyone can see it… Really cool…

For this you just need to login with facebook or twitter at thinglink(it’s free),follow the instructions how to add thinglink to your tumblr account and voila, here it is…

Even when some tumblr themes are incompatible with thinglink (my theme is also not fully compatible), the most are… And it makes a lot of fun!…

You can try it out commenting on my picture here… It is a much easier way to communicate as the usual disqus, which I believe noone uses anymore…

The bottom line is that if tolerance is an important aspect of our faith as Arabs and Muslims, contemporary human difficulties are represented as common problems for all of humanity and that is what brings us together more than what divides us.

21 Sample Poses to Get You Started with Photographing Couples...
[ Posted Sun, 27 May 2012 22:29:16 ]

In the previous articles in this posing guide series we looked individually at posing female subjects, posing male subjects and posing children. In those individual person portraits the main subject was a single person and her or his personality. In comparison, couple photography is more about connection, interaction and above all – feelings between two people. And most probably those are very deep and passionate feelings, which makes couple photography so delightful and positive.

Generally a couple should be easy to engage in a photo shoot. If they are initially a bit shy or feeling uncomfortable, just ask them to show you how they felt and looked when they met for the first time. You will invoke them on an emotional level, providing you with natural and loving expressions in their portraits.

21 Sample Poses to get you Started with Photographing Children...
[ Posted Sat, 12 May 2012 18:30:52 ]

After our previous articles onposing female subjectsandposing men, let's look at some starting points with photographing children. Little ones are definitely fun and very positive subjects to photograph! Getting those real and authentic emotions and showing through your pictures the joy of a childhood is a very warm and sincere feeling.

However dealing with kids sometimes can be quite challenging. You have to be ready that they often have their own thoughts on their mind and you need to be very patient and adapt to their natural behavior. Don't assume that they will listen carefully and follow your instructions exactly. That's why you most probably won't be able to use these samples as posing cheat sheet. Use them rather as a reference for ideas and different scenarios for you photo shoot.

21 Sample Poses to Get You Started with Photographing Female Subjects...
[ Posted Sat, 31 Mar 2012 10:35:00 ]

If you ever run out of ideas, get stuck in creativity or simply need some guidance when shooting female subjects (in opposite to male subjects), you may use following posing samples as a ...posing cheat sheet. Many pro photographers use such a technique when preparing for and during the photo shoot.

The poses in this article are selected as initial reference. I would advise to look at the poses together with your subject, especially if she's inexperienced. During a photo shoot don't hesitate to discuss with the subject which pose is or isn't working in any particular situation. It's usually very productive and you both will feel more confident in what you are doing.

Photoshop tutorial: Letterpress effect...
[ Posted Mon, 26 Mar 2012 18:29:00 ]

"There are many letterpress-inspired tutorials out there, but the ones I've seen simply apply inner shadows to the text. But, inner shadows are just one component of a letterpress look — there's also the indented, pillowed-look to the paper when it's been ‘pressed’…"

KERNTYPE - a kerning game...
[ Posted Sun, 18 Mar 2012 11:11:00 ]

Instructions

Your mission is simple: achieve pleasant and readable text by distributing the space between letters. Typographers call this activity kerning. Your solution will be compared to a typographer’s solution, and you will be given a score depending on how close you nailed it. Good luck!

There is also the next step: SHAPE TYPE- a letter shaping game…

You may have heard words like aperture, exposure, and shutter speed and wondered just how on earth they come together to give you a better photo.

I'll give you a brief introduction on what they do and how they affect your photos turning out too bright, too dark, too blurry or JUST RIGHT. :)

This guide will show you how to get the most out of your SLR camera and give you confidence to take it out of auto mode in no time!…

Bar Mleczny. Ein Ethnologe in der Milchbar....
[ Posted Sat, 07 Jan 2012 11:40:16 ]

Doch was soll’s!…
